Create Your Vision for 2025: The Power of Vision Boards in Education

Goal setting has a long history that pre-dates ancient civilizations. Educators are familiar with the concept of SMART goals as developed by George T. Doran in 1981. Our IEP process would not be the same without the incorporation of SMART goals. Students do best when their goals have framework and structure as identified by SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound.) But how familiar are you with the use of vision boards and the power they can hold in the arena of goal setting?

Vision boards gained popularity in the late 80s and early 90s. In short, they are a collage of images and words used to put focus and intention into goal setting. To create a vision board, you need a small assortment of supplies. You’ll need a poster board or canvas, an array of magazines, scissors and glue. Markers, inspirational stickers and fun scrapbooking paper are also a great way to add texture and variety to your board.

This summer, as part of a team planning and bonding meeting, the executive team of JIM Enterprises created a vision board to set us in motion for the academic year ahead. The collective collaboration was key in creating a vision that not only focused on the company’s mission, but helped propel us in the direction of the future. Individually we sorted through an array of magazines selecting words and images that encompassed our future success. Then, as a team, we came together to arrange the pieces into a powerful uniform design. Pictured here is our end result. In the center of our board are the words “Powerful Partnership,” the reminder of our ultimate focus and integral need to stay focused on our bottom line.

As we embrace the new year and look forward to 2025, we encourage you and your students to use the power of vision boards to help goal set and plan your future. There is such power in the intentionality of the process. Whether you are a parent or an educator, please take the time to set up a project such as this. It can be used in a classroom setting to set intentions for the remainder of the academic year. It’s a great way to incorporate SEL goals.  It is also a great way to help foster a healthy parent child relationship at home. Take time as a family to set aside your technology and work on being intentional as a family unit. Focus on shared goals and what you envision for your year. Once complete, find a place in either your classroom or home to showcase and serve as a visual reminder of your path ahead. Wishing you a happy New Year from JIM Enterprises. May all your visions come true!
