Falling for Fun Facts & Fresh Ideas!

Any time a season changes, we are given the opportunity to reflect, set new goals and tackle opportunities ahead. Our student programs are currently in full force. Our instructors are embracing all the changes we made to the curriculum over the summer and we wanted to use this opportunity to highlight some of the exciting modifications we made to enhance our Jump Into English for students program.

If you aren’t familiar with our programs, it’s important for you to take note that in providing after school intervention services, we typically have two educators in every room. This allows us to operate a rotational model providing support to 3 small groups of students. The credentialed Instructor focuses on direct instruction, providing scaffolded instruction to a small group of students using our common core aligned intervention curriculum. Simultaneously, a Para Instructor focuses on active learning by engaging students with fluency practice. Lastly, a third small group of students work independently on our digital component. The intuitive software focuses on missing standards to target and support bringing students up to grade level.

We provide the Para Instructors with JIM Enterprises proprietary curriculum that consists of fluency packets, flashcard practice and fluency activities that bring excitement to the learning process. This summer, we were able to increase the fluency packets content to include not only sight word practice but a common core focus on phonological awareness. Students learn to manipulate parts of words and identify the onset-rime and phonemes present in the fluency packets. The fluency activities make the learning process fun. We have six games that Para Instructors have the ability to rotate through. Of the six, three were redesigned this summer to not only help engage students but give them variety in the learning process. Photographed here are examples of Slides and Ladders and Jump Into Sight Words.

We appreciate the JIM Educators for embracing these changes and falling wholeheartedly into the learning process with our students. The success of our students is found in the dedication of our Instructors & Paras Instructors.

1. Pumpkin Math

Bring in pumpkins of various sizes and have your child estimate their weight, circumference, and number of seeds. Afterward, weigh and measure the pumpkins to see how close their estimates were.

2. Nature Walk & Writing Prompts

Go on a nature walk and observe the changing environment. Have your child write short poems, descriptive paragraphs, or stories inspired by what they see and hear.

3. Apple Tasting & Graphing

Organize an apple tasting where your child & a group of friends try different apple varieties (Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Honeycrisp, etc.). Then, create a graph showing their favorite types of apples.

4. Fall-Themed STEM Challenge

Challenge students to build the tallest structure they can using only candy corn and toothpicks, or task them with creating a “pumpkin launcher” using simple materials like popsicle sticks and rubber bands.

5. Spooky Story Writing

Have students write their own spooky or mystery stories. They can illustrate their stories and share them with the family after dinner.

These activities blend fun with educational value, making the fall season exciting for your child while promoting learning across different subjects.
